In this residential studio, we were given a profile of the homeowners, John and Karen Smith, and their children, along with specific needs, and then we were released to establish a floor plan of the home. From there, we were instructed to select four spaces of our own choosing to highlight for our design. We wrote and submitted a programming document, such as would be presented to a client, and proceeded with our concept.
The concept for this design is “Meeting.” The large space in the center of the home is a meeting of different spaces, the kitchen and dining, the entry and circulation, as well as the great room. The featured spaces in this design, kitchen/dining, great room, master bedroom and master bath are where craftsman style architecture meets modern meets contemporary. The canvas of painted white walls and ceiling, white-leather seating and white-lacquered cabinets, meets with color and texture from tile, stone, interesting tables and various unique accessories. Finally, from great room to kitchen, cool-colored fabrics meet warm-hued granite and custom colored-glass lighting fixtures. The flooring throughout is a tile with a white-washed wood appearance. The atmosphere is meant to be calming, comfortable, sophisticated and minimal. The budget (we were given no ceiling for this project) for these four spaces came to just under $500k.
